Identities and Life Outcomes

**Short Description:** Most socioeconomic research on social disparities - including studies using the SOEP - relies on categorizing individuals into social groups based on standard demographic variables. This study explores how the psychological significance of these social categories - namely, social identities - can predict life outcomes beyond what conventional demographic measures can explain.

**Methodological Details:** Participants were asked to rate how important various social, economic, political, and cultural characteristics are to their self-concept - that is, the degree to which they identify with each characteristic.
